The data
The office furniture waste problem comes down to a few numbers: the EPA estimates roughly 17 billion pounds of furniture waste in the US each year, quality commercial furniture is built to last 15 to 20 years, and it still holds about 20 cents on the dollar when it is thrown out. Most of that waste is avoidable.
How much furniture do we throw away?
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, about 17 billion pounds of furniture waste is generated each year. A large portion is commercial furniture removed during relocations and redesigns, not because it is worn out, but because there was no plan to reuse it.
How long should it have lasted?
Premium commercial furniture is engineered for 15 to 20 years of daily use. When a five year old floor is landfilled, most of that design life is simply discarded.
What is the value being lost?
- Resale value: commercial furniture holds roughly 20 cents on the dollar, which is thrown away at disposal.
- Buyer savings: second-life furniture sells at 50 to 70% below retail, a saving that never happens when the item is scrapped.
- Embodied carbon: every replacement adds the emissions of new raw materials, manufacturing, and transport.
